Impressions of Thessalia & Magnisia, Greece
Thessalia, Thessaly in English, would not be very often on the travel itinerary in Greece, if it were not for the absolute highlight of Byzantine creation, the monasteries of Meteora. And yet, there is more. The city of Larissa is quite interesting, with a modern, first class archaeological museum and some very well-preserved ancient theatre remains. From here it's a short haul to the beauty of nature and the simple and robust villages of the Pilion peninsula in the east. And along with that we also pick up some windfall insights: were we well aware that the oldest known Neolithic settlements in Europe are to be found near Volos? And did we know why St Christopher is sometimes depicted on frescos with a dog's head? The answers are here. Have fun.
Before visiting the place of your choice:
Kato Gatzea is one of Pilion's seaside villages. From here a steep road climbs up to the mountainous lands of southern Pilion, to the village of Aghios Yorgios at an elevation of 700 metres, small and neat, with a shaded central square, unassuming but cozy and pleasant, surrounded by a cluster of old and sturdy houses built in natural stone. Some of these dwellings take the allure of aristocratic mansions, reflecting the prosperity of the leading families. From here, the views over the Pagasetic Gulf are wide, unhindered and spectacular.
