Impressions of London, UK
London is one of those cities which need a lifetime to get to know properly and in depth. This report is consequently, indeed, not more than 'impressions of London'. But still, many of the city's highlights are on record here, the result of a lot, a real lot of walking around in the streets, on the squares, along the Thames River, across the many bridges, taking in the views of landmarks and other highlights, also those which are less frequently visited, such as the Leadenhall Market and Ennismore Gardens. And while strolling around the city among people having a beer on the pub's sidewalk, rushing in and out of the underground entrance gates, going about their daily lives surrounded by monuments and traces of old and recent history, a very striking thing comes to mind: unlike in many other capital cities, ultramodern architectural development, for instance in the City and around the Tower, has harmoniously found its place right next to medieval and ancient edifices and structures. The ultimate indication of a city's dynamic and creative energy.
Before visiting the place of your choice:
Once a shabby back street in the Soho district, Carnaby Street became prominent in the late 1950s and the 1960s for its fashion and music bars, where The Who and The Rolling Stones put up their shows and concerts. Those days are gone, but pedestrian Carnaby Street has kept some of its clout alive nevertheless. Just beyond one of the Carnaby Street entrance arches is Liberty House, with a pseudo Tudor facade of … 1925. Much of the house is authentically old, though, as the inside of the front doors with the names of Henry VIII's wives seems to suggest.
